Keyboard repeat rate test

Inspect held-key repeat intervals and report their browser-observed frequency with a stated range.

Also known as: keyboard repeat rate test, keyboard repeat test, keyboard polling rate test, keyboard hz test, key repeat speed test. Free, online, and no download required.

Hold one ordinary key to collect repeat intervals.

What the keyboard repeat rate test checks

CheckHow it is measuredFails when
Repeat eventsRepeated keydown timestamps are kept for one event.code.The browser does not deliver repeat events.
Interval rateThe median repeat interval is converted to events per second.Too few stable intervals arrive.
SpreadMedian absolute deviation describes scheduling variation. The range remains too broad for a useful estimate.
If something failed
No repeat sample appears

Check the connection and selected device, then repeat the failed check: no repeat sample appears.

The rate matches system settings

Check the connection and selected device, then repeat the failed check: the rate matches system settings.

Different keys produce different runs

Check the connection and selected device, then repeat the failed check: different keys produce different runs.

How to read the result

How the keyboard repeat rate test works

The first keydown chooses a physical code. Later keydown events with repeat=true contribute timestamp intervals until keyup. A fixed-size ref buffer prevents unbounded growth, and the shared timing probe calculates median frequency and uncertainty only for valid positive intervals.

What the result can establish

Use a letter key, hold it steadily for several seconds and release before finishing. Repeat after changing an operating-system repeat setting to confirm what the browser exposes.

Measurement limits

Operating-system repeat delay and repeat rate dominate this result. It is not the physical keyboard report rate and should not be compared directly with device marketing values.

Keyboard repeat rate test questions

Is this keyboard hz test the same as a device report rate?

No. What it measures is browser key-repeat frequency while a key is held, and that interval is dominated by your operating system's repeat delay and repeat rate settings. A keyboard's USB report rate is not exposed to any web page.

Why does my keyboard polling rate test match my OS setting?

Because that is what the browser is reporting. Change the repeat rate in your system keyboard settings, rerun the test, and the measured value will follow it. That relationship is the clearest demonstration of where this number comes from.

Which key should I hold for the key repeat speed test?

Use an ordinary letter key and hold it steadily for several seconds before releasing. Modifiers, function keys and system-reserved combinations may not generate repeat events at all, which would end the sample before it collects enough intervals.
