Before you start

Understand what controller stick drift is before measuring it. An analogue stick reports a position on two axes, normally between -1 and 1, and should read approximately zero on both when untouched. Drift is a persistent non-zero resting value, caused by wear in the potentiometers or by contamination inside the mechanism.

Put the controller down on a flat surface and take your hands off it completely. Any contact at all, including resting a finger on the stick, invalidates the measurement — and this is the single most common reason people get inconsistent results.

Close remapping and calibration software. Vendor tools frequently apply their own dead zone or centre calibration, which will mask exactly the value you are trying to observe.

Run the check

Open the gamepad test, press any button to expose the pad, then leave it alone for at least ten seconds. Axis values are sampled once per animation frame and shown to two decimal places, so a resting value that sits at 0.12 rather than 0.00 is immediately visible.

Note both the value and its stability. Genuine controller stick drift is characteristically steady: the axis parks at a consistent offset and stays there. A value that wanders around zero in small amounts is normal analogue noise, and every controller has some.

Repeat with the stick pushed to an extreme and released, several times. A stick that returns to a different resting value each time has a mechanical return problem, which behaves differently from steady drift and often responds to cleaning.

Test the other stick as well. Drift on one axis of one stick is the usual pattern; drift on both sticks simultaneously more often points at a calibration or firmware problem than at wear.

Record the numbers. A screenshot showing a resting value with your hands off the pad is far more persuasive in a support conversation than a description of a character walking on its own.

Read your result

A resting value under roughly 0.05 that fluctuates is normal noise, and every game's dead zone absorbs it. This is not drift and no action is warranted.

A steady resting value above roughly 0.1 on one axis is meaningful drift. It will push past the dead zone in games with tight settings, which is why it appears in one game and not another and why people wrongly conclude the game is at fault.

A stick that reads correctly at rest but fails to reach 1.0 at its extremes has a range problem rather than a drift problem. Both are wear, but only one is described by the word drift, and using the right term speeds up a warranty conversation.

Measurement limits

The browser reads mapped axis values published by the driver. It cannot see the raw potentiometer voltage, the controller's internal calibration or its firmware dead zone, so a pad that applies its own centre correction may show clean values while a game still misbehaves.

Sampling happens once per animation frame, which is fine for a resting measurement but means fast transient spikes may not be captured.

Nothing here can distinguish contamination from worn components. Both produce identical readings, though contamination is far more likely on a pad that developed the problem suddenly.

What to do next

A steady offset above 0.1, reproducible across sessions and on more than one machine, justifies a warranty claim or a stick module replacement. Both are common repairs and neither requires a new controller.

Before that, try increasing the dead zone in the affected game. It is not a fix, but it confirms the diagnosis: if a larger dead zone eliminates the symptom exactly, drift is the cause.

If the pad is out of warranty and you are comfortable opening it, cleaning the stick mechanism resolves contamination-related drift in a meaningful share of cases. Replacement stick modules are inexpensive and widely available for popular controllers.
