Why is my mic so quiet? Gain, distance and processing

A quiet microphone is still detected; start with input selection, speaking distance, and a local recording before changing gain.

Run the check

  1. Select the intended input in the microphone test and speak at a repeatable distance for a short sample.

  2. Replay the local recording and compare the meter with another app using the same microphone.

  3. Increase one documented input-level control at a time, then repeat the phrase and listen for added noise or clipping.

Read the result

A healthy local recording but quiet calls points to the call application's input or processing. A consistently low local signal across apps warrants a device, distance, or connection check.

Limits and next step

Browser level can include automatic gain and does not reveal analogue preamp settings or the remote listener's volume.

Repeat the check after changing one setting or connection. Keep a record of what changed before deciding whether the device needs service.
