What is keyboard ghosting?
Write the group. Record the keys, order and which ones you keep held. A missing newest key and an already-held position disappearing are different observations. The word ghosting alone cannot describe the event sequence well enough for a controlled repeat.
Does the combination include a system shortcut? Replace it with ordinary letters for a separate baseline, while keeping the original group in your notes. System interception can remove events before the page receives them. The browser cannot infer a failed physical key from a reserved action that never arrives.
Record the model's documented rollover setting without turning it into a browser guarantee. N-key rollover and 6-key rollover are specification labels, but mode, mapping and the application still matter. Do not assume a fourth key disappearing is automatically acceptable just because no specification was printed.
Test rollover one key at a time
Add keys separately. Hold the first ordinary key, add the next without releasing it and continue through the group you need. Watch the received map and largest held set. Release the group completely before starting another order so old held entries cannot confuse the observation.
Which event is missing? Record whether the newest press never appeared or a previous position cleared unexpectedly. The keyboard test demonstrates the delivered result, but cannot identify a diode, matrix path or USB report slot by the appearance of that map alone.
Repeat the same group in another order and then in another region of the board. Keep those as separate samples with the same number of intended keys. A position-dependent difference gives you a useful description for support; it still does not inspect the physical matrix that might explain it.
USB limit, matrix ghosting or system shortcut?
A consistent held-key count can suggest a reporting limit worth investigating. It does not prove that a particular USB protocol is active. The browser does not read the descriptor or raw reports, and several layers can change which events arrive. Keep the protocol explanation as a hypothesis, not a measured conclusion.
A difference between nearby and spread-out groups can suggest a position-dependent constraint. It cannot establish the number of diodes, circuit price or electrical path. Describe the exact keys and order that changed the result rather than labelling the whole keyboard as cheaply built or electrically defective.
Does the problem appear only with one shortcut? Compare the same intended action in the affected application and review its bindings. The absence of a browser event does not establish that nothing about the hardware matters; it simply leaves that part of the comparison unobserved by the page.
What a browser cannot see in the matrix
The page receives KeyboardEvent.code and release events. It cannot read matrix wiring, firmware, report mode or electrical contacts. A missing key on the map is evidence about this browser sample, not proof of why the key was dropped earlier in the input route.
A position that remains held after release needs a separate release check. Focus changes and intercepted events can leave incomplete observations. Clear the run and repeat without switching windows. The three-second review threshold used by the map is not a physical sticky-switch diagnosis.
Some devices offer modes or profiles that change input behaviour. Use only current model-specific instructions when comparing them and record the original setting. The guide cannot promise that an update enables a different report mode or fixes every combination problem; a fresh controlled test is still needed.
Do you need N-key rollover?
Choose from the task. If an ordinary combination matters in your application, repeat it there and in the browser before changing devices. A working browser group and a failing game group identify different observed routes; they do not prove the keyboard is uninvolved in every possible explanation.
For missing individual positions or repeated characters, use the keyboard check guide instead of treating them as rollover results. Keep the connection and layout fixed while comparing the original symptom. A full proven map cannot certify all held combinations, and a held group cannot certify every isolated key.
If the needed group repeatedly fails, record the model, mode, keys and press order for support or a future device comparison. The n-key rollover requirement should come from the combinations you actually use. This guide does not prescribe replacement from one missing event or promise universal compatibility for an advertised mode.
Symptom table
| Symptom | Likely layer | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| An isolated key never appears | The delivered position is missing | Compare the same press in the keyboard test and another application |
| A held combination loses a key | The input route or device constraints need comparison | Record another order and physical group |
| A released key stays highlighted | An unmatched release needs a focused repeat | Clear the run and repeat without changing windows |
Common questions
What is the difference between ghosting and rollover?
Ghosting can describe an unintended key registration, while rollover concerns simultaneous input handling. In common use the terms can be mixed. Record the actual group and press order instead of relying on the label. The browser can show received events, but cannot inspect the electrical matrix or report protocol behind them.
Does N-key rollover matter outside gaming?
It depends on the simultaneous combinations the task requires, including shortcuts, music input or other applications. Test those groups with the intended mode and connection. A maximum held count on this page does not certify every combination, and the guide cannot define one required count for every user or application.
Can a software update fix keyboard ghosting?
A change can affect delivered input in some setups, but the browser cannot establish whether firmware, mapping or a physical constraint caused the missing combination. Consult the exact model's instructions before changing modes or updating software. Repeat the same group afterwards rather than promising that an update repairs the matrix.
What is N-key rollover?
N-key rollover refers to a device's simultaneous-key handling specification. Check the model's documented modes and test the combinations you actually need. A browser held-key map observes received events, not the raw protocol or every physical group. Keep the specification and the tested sample separate when assessing suitability.
